About

We are were a group dedicated to creating HD Blu-ray re-encodes with English subtitles. We may occasionally also encode from TV or Web rips or do SD DVD encodes.

We will not:

  1. Encode a series we are not interested in (which is most likely one you are).
  2. Release a v2 outside of a batch unless it is something really major (Example: Video plays in reverse).
  3. Create patches. We’d rather waste your bandwidth than our time.
  4. Release SD versions of HD encodes.
  5. Release resolutions larger than the source.
  6. Encode from pre-encoded raws.
  7. Encode lossless Blu-ray audio to anything other than FLAC.
  8. Use R1 (Retail) subs when there is a good fansub.

We will do what we want, and do not care about your opinion.
(unless we ask for it)

Why? I would trust a Retail Sub more than a Fansub

Because the retail subs are done by Professionals and the Fansubs are done by people when they have spare time

    Kinda seems stupid

Dear coalgirls, I’ve been seeing a lot lately people keep saying your torrent are very big size. But that does not matter to me. I prefer it to be bigger and the most important is. The quality of the video. Thanks coalgirls. keep it up. Awaiting for more good shows.

I discovered Coalgirls very recently and downloaded over 300 GB worth anime till now. But I couldn’t help but notice that you haven’t done few of the old classics like Yu Yu Hakushu, and neither have you done the Ghost In The Shell series. Hope you have them planned too 🙂 Thanks a lot Coalgirls, you rock \m/

@bloop It’s a girl, made out of coal, that re-encodes anime shows

  11. Kreion writes:

    @Grognak
Retail isn’t always necessarily better…I mean there are examples where fansubs have been better. The reason is simple, the people subbing the series for free are more likely to care more about the outcome, since they chose to do it. It certainly isn’t always the case, but R1 being better than a fansub is not always the case.

And sometimes it just comes down to preference.

thanx for all your efforts @coalgirl 🙂

got a question for anyone who can bother !

Why do coalgirls and all anime groups use FLAC for audio ? 5 years ago i could understand…but in 2014 original BD’s are TrueHD and any PC/AVR/Media player can read that !
Why bother “converting” in FLAC when it is easier to use the source audio ?

thanx for anyone who can enlighten me, as it has been bothering me for months now….

    • ChrisK writes:

Uhm, almost no Anime Blu-ray uses TruHD audio, 99% use PCM and the rest DTS-HD MA. And we reencode to FLAC because that’s more efficient and more compatible than DTS-HD MA.

Glad to meet you. I’m a noob anime subtitle translator who is poor at Japanese.
These days, I’m making subs of The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls by retranslating the official English subs of Daisuki(CG anime official online sevice site outside Japan) to learn both Japanese and skills for writing an animation screenplay. I’m also planning to make subs of the prequel, The Idolmaster when CG anime is over. And here’s my request.
May I retranslate your English subtitle into my language? (Korean actually) I’m only making and sharing subs without video. I guarantee that the name of Coalgirls, the retranslation source, will be specified in my subs at the beginning and the end of every episodes.
    Thank you.

    Dear Coalgirls,

I just want to thank you encode group, for encoding these series, because the Coalgirls are awesome. The Coalgirls know how to encode from raw source to good compressed videos (they use crf), and also sometimes Coalgirls release treasures like an 10-bit data piece, also most of the time the Coalgirls choice the best subs, and if people call this group faggots because they can’t encode because of the file size, then these people lack knowledge, because these people probably never knew what the original raw size of the file could be.

    Your Regards,
