Yeah, I knew it was worth waiting, and I kinda hoped you would bring the same 10 bits qualtity as you did for Bakemonogatari.

I can now enjoy Madoka to the fullest!

  7. hero writes:

    Hm…
I know, that 10-bit is somehow good, but I should say that this encoding is new too(for example no HD player can play them yet and just latest versions of PC players can play them).
I think it is best if you could release series in both 8-bit and 10-bit at least in this season, so 10-bit players become more common and stable.

    Regards

  8. TS writes:

Suck it up? You had ample opportunity to download the previous release while it was there.

  9. MCP writes:

Just when were the 8-bit versions of episodes 11 & 12 available?

  10. NiggaInTehCrib writes:

“Yes, I did just re-encode this entire series into 10-bit.”

And damn, is it ever worth it. Thanks man!

  11. My Required Name writes:

I’m still hoping they release it on 8-bit.
I mean, they themselves said that they won’t change something midway but I guess they do whatever the fuck they want. If not, I’ll just grab another group’s release without the 10bit shenanigans..

  12. shelly writes:

    Thanks for the subs 😉

  13. nand writes:

So does this use the fixed encoder (levels bugs) or the broken one still?

If it uses the broken one then I may as well throw it away.

  14. DmonHiro writes:

Did you just reencode the whole thing again, to 10-bit? Damn man… that’s above and beyond the call of duty. You rock.

  15. Larnu writes:

Still not a fan of 10bit either if I’m honest, due to the stupidity of MPC giving me subs the size of god… I’m slowly running out of sub groups until some kind a Media Player that’s decent plays these files >_<

  16. DmonHiro writes:

Lurnu, it’s YOU who’s doing something wrong. I’m using MPC-HC and it plays the subs just as it was for 8bit: perfectly.

  17. loldex writes:

*Very* nice job. Will there be DDLs of the 1080p versions?

  18. gruntguy writes:

Can someone tell me how to switch between sub tracks. MPC-HC is only showing Chihiro as the only option. And as far as Chihiro subs go, how are they compared to Nutbladder, gg, and yesy? I already considered gg to be a kind of less serious group making stupid jokes and strange translations, but apparently their subs are still good.

  19. Isabelyes writes:

    Uh, so you didn’t release 8-bit versions of episodes 11 & 12?

    ;_;

  20. Туфли writes:

Coalgirls, do you intend to release drama CDs of Madoka?

  21. Kairi writes:

I have been getting these as they were released ,so I just got 11 and 12 from this torrent and the only 2 10bit files. Now I can’t watch them unless I sit at my computer ?
You said you would not do this. You said that only new projects going forward would be 10 bit.
10 bit may be great but no hardware that plays mkv files supports it. That takes many people that watch on their big screen TVs back to their PC monitor . In this way 10 bit sucks the big one.
Please PLEASE live up to your word and release episodes 11 and 12 in 8 bit

  22. DmonHiro writes:

@Kairi: You missunderstood. They said they would not switch in the middle of a show. They didn’t… they released the whole thing in 10bit. Technically, they didn’t lie. 2nd: can’t you just connect your PC to your TV by a HDMI or DVI cable?

  23. Isabelyes writes:

@DMonHiro: Even if they didn’t lie, /technically/, this is still horrible news for people like me, who don’t own powerful computers and have to do with watching anime on their laptops that can barely handle 720p. Especially since no other group (that I know of) has or will release the final two episodes in 8-bit format.

And really, if Coalgirls went through the effort to make every episode 10-bit…then surely they can release just the final two in 8-bit? Because this way, they /were/ lying; they did switch in the middle of the show. They simply re-released the older eps in 10-bit, too.

I mean, it’s great that you’re supporting this new format.
But can’t you just let /us/, those who can’t play 10-bit files at all, enjoy Madoka one last time?

  24. MahaiOne writes:

Wait for doki’s BD release then, they only have 1 volume left and are releasing in 8bit

  25. coalgirl writes:

When we said middle of the show, we meant that we’re not going to mix 8-bit and 10-bit for any series. Sorry if you took it to mean something else.

  26. DmonHiro writes:

Look, you have to realize that you WILL have to upgrade eventually.

  27. wewaea writes:

Seriously, either cough up 500$ for a Hexacore/ core i5 2500k @4.5ghz machine or download TV releases. No reason for a BD group to cater low performance issues.

  28. MahaiOne writes:

You don’t need a good PC to watch 10bit releases, just a PC that isn’t horrible.

  29. Isabelyes writes:

@MahaiOne: I know, but they don’t use gg subs, which I believe are eps 11 & 12’s best.

@coalgirl: No, that’s my fault. I’m sorry for complaining; it’s not like I’m paying you or anything, so I shouldn’t automatically expect you to do what I want. I guess I’ve just been spoiled by the internet. ^^

@DMonHiro: That might take /years/, though. I don’t play new PC games – only 3DS games and Touhou – so I won’t upgrade for that. I guess I should if every subbing/release group is going to use 10-bit, though I’ve almost 1TB of old, compatible anime to watch, too.

@Wewaea: Don’t be ridiculous; for the average person, 500$ is a lot of money. There’s no need for /anyone/ to upload /anything/, either, since they’re not making profit. All release and subbing groups are catering to their fans, and I’d imagine there’s a fair amount of fans that are experiencing troubles with 10-bit files. So there’s plenty of reasons for a BD group to cater to us. We just shouldn’t expect them to.

@MahaiOne (second post): Fair enough, but I’m using a laptop. They’re hard to upgrade, so I’ll have to pay a lot of money even if I only want to get a non-horrible PC.

    Well, thanks for your replies, everyone; I’m sorry if my post seemed arrogant or ungrateful, even, because I can certainly see 10-bit’s merits. I understand why you’re upgrading; I simply had yet to accept it. ;_;

But I’ll look around for some cheap solutions. I wouldn’t want to miss out on the newest anime, after all.

  30. Javac writes:

Still have which plan again pay 10 bits ?

  31. asd writes:

@Isabelyes Stop being 12 years old. Get a job and save up some money. Seriously it’s not that much unless you’re already living on welfare. In that case why would you even be watching imported shows from a different country.

  32. Isabelyes writes:

Is there, perhaps, a way for me to manually convert the final two episodes to 8-bit myself?
I don’t mind letting my computer convert for a full day or so if that’s needed.

  33. Isabelyes writes:

(Sorry for second-posting, I didn’t see his post)

@asd: Then why would anyone ever release movies and anime in 720p? After all, 1080p is better, and anyone can save up some money to buy a new 1TB hard drive, so space isn’t an issue either.

Yes, indeed – I /could/ work my ass off and somehow get 400$ (which, for me, /is/ “that much”) to buy a new, somewhat full-fledged computer. But if there’s a way for me to do it for way less money, and in way less time, then I’d rather not waste both my time and money.

If you’re going to give solutions, you should give sound ones.

  34. anon writes:

I can’t get any subtitles using madVR and I have no intention of doing a fresh install of everything in the hope that it actually does work because it took me too long to get ffdshow and haali to work correctly with multiAVCHD; it’s just not worth the time or the headache. And, quite frankly, I like using ffdshow for all of the tweaks I can do with it.

I do thank you for all of your hard work, but I’ll just have to download from someone else until there’s some real imperative for me to go through the trouble.

  35. Seba writes:

When I first read about 10bit I thought: “Great, same quality on a smaller file !!” What a mistake …

Now if I want to see something in 1080p I have to download almost 2GB for 25′ of anime, a total of 20 GB for a 12 episodes show.

I am not asking for nothing, just thinking aloud.

    Have a nice weekend !

  36. MahaiOne writes:

Actually they average at about 1.5GB for 24ish minutes of video.

  39. Kairi writes:

    @DmonHiro,
I don’t care if they re-release a re- encoded 10bit .Good for them . But they never finished the 8 bit.
That leaves it unfinished and since the only option for 11 and 12 are 10 bit then yes they switched before the series was finished. As for moving my computer from another room just to watch 2 episodes ? We have MPAA with the DMCA restricting the way we watch and on what. Making us jump through hoops just to watch a movie, Now you’re telling me how to watch too???

  40. MahaiOne writes:

The MPAA doesn’t give two shits about anime.

  41. Scruffy writes:

Thanks for all your efforts for putting this out, although I too would have wished you had stuck with 8bit. Currently you seem to have to jump through a few hoops to get 10bit working. Here’s my experience with ep 11 and this 10bit encode

MPC with MadVR as per FAQ. Plays but skips frames and stutters.
SMPlayer. Plays but artifacts so looks like this is not decoding 10 bit
    CCCP. All ok.

  42. Zeffy writes:

    I love you, Coalgirls.

  43. DmonHiro writes:

@Kairi: Are you seriously comparing the MPAA and the DMC act to having to watch stuff off your PC? If yes, then there is no helping you, as you are obviously insane. How freaking hard is it to hook up your PC to your TV? If you don’t want to do it, then fine. But then don’t complain.

  44. nand writes:

@Isabelyes: Mux the gg subs onto doki’s 8-bit releases then or re-encode the 10 bit to 8-bit yourself.

@anon: If you can’t get something as simple as subtitles to work then I don’t think you should be watching high quality releases in the first place. People are really getting everything shoved up their asses these days, working for your entitlement should be a basic necessity again.

@Isabelyes: You actually make a good point. Why /do/ we release anything in 720p (unless it’s an upscale)? I wonder when we can drop the silly low resolutions for BD releases.

    • coalgirl writes:

My monitor is 1280×720 (It used to be 1024×768, but I got a better one). 720p is the base and 1080p is added on top because I watch the 720p. And contrary to popular belief, I don’t do this for anyone downloading it. I do it so I can watch shows that I wouldn’t have otherwise. That’s also the reason why 720p is usually flawless – the 1080p is what is sometimes messed up.

  45. nand writes:

@coalgirl: What I would do in your situation (apart from getting a 1080p monitor) is encoding the 1080p versions and then downscaling them to 720p during playback.

  46. dymitr writes:

    @Coalgirl

I don’t understand why the 1080p sometimes become messed up while the 720p doesn’t…
If you use the same source, the same script, and the .avs (with one line changed) the result should be the same right?

Unless, of course you make the 1080p first, than the 720p, check it, fix any error in the 720p while leaving the 1080p the same. If that;s the case isn’t better to make the 720p first and then the 1080p.
Considering you only watch the 720p it makes sense that you would encode it first :/

Correct me if I’m wrong, but unless your using completely different encoding methods for 1080p there shouldn’t be any added problems to the 1080p which weren’t in the 720p.

  47. asd writes:

@Coalgirl oh god even smartphones are almost 720p.

  48. MahaiOne writes:

Yeah, but watching anime on tiny screens is for masochists.

  49. CarVac writes:

I hate this release so much. Now I see compression artifacts on EVERYTHING ELSE.

Really, thanks so much for this. Hi 10 Profile is astounding: the difference in detail between this 10-bit and your old 8-bit release is like the difference between the TV-sourced 720p and 8-bit 1080p! Any banding that’s still there is caused by my crappy (6-bit panel) monitor.

    mplayer2 works perfectly for playback.

  50. RocketZX writes:

sorry call me stupid but, is this the BD version of madoka or the TV version upscaled to 1080p?
i’m downloading episode 1 to check anyways but just saying it doesn’t say BD anywhere…
