    What a surprise!

Although i already have the Eclipse version(which is also 720p), might consider getting this for archiving purpose.

  3. saivan writes:

Wait. Are you sure this is an upscale? I saw atsa’s version, in 1080p and it did not seem to be an upscale.

  4. Tiago writes:

    Thanks for doing this 🙂

I’m confused about the date, in Europe we say: day/month/year. Is that 4th of May or 5th or April?

  5. Corentin writes:

I’m almost sure it’s not an upscale. I have the ATSA versions up until ep50, and 1080 quality is definitely there.

  6. FatPanda writes:

If you’re using Eclipse’s subs, did you do your own typesetting for the signs?

Eclipse pretty much always use hard encoded signs (and for OP/ED) merely using their .ass files isn’t enough.

  7. hurf writes:

AtsA used some antialiasing, that’s why it looks okay at 1080p. but the fmab is typical BONES series produced at 540p

  8. corocoro writes:

With enough filters you can even make SnQ look good at 1080p, but that doesn’t change it is an upscale. 😉
Anyway, what happened to episode 39?
I do remember the original HDTV to had some annoying blend-ins (wasn’t there also an episode with a huge storm warning throughout?), so this is a very welcome encode. ^^

    • ChrisK writes:

Cyras is splicing in the NCOPs/EDs, 39 has new OP/ED but the NC Version will be on the next disc, so it comes with the next batch.

  9. corocoro writes:

Thanks for the answer ChrisK. ^^

Wow, I didn’t expect this at all. Any chance your guest encoder will be doing Soul Eater >.<

  14. hurf writes:

ANE is doing Maria Holic. i doubt that CG could do better considering the source quality.

  15. baka writes:

how’s the quality compared to AtsA’s?

  16. IZEROII writes:

Dunno how this sizes up to AtsA’s but I’ll pick it up

  17. Nettosama writes:

    What a nice surprise! Thanks!

  18. Bloodios writes:

What a pleasant surprise indeed, this show needed some Blu-ray treatment. Winry looks gorgeous.
By the way, did you (or will you intend to) edit/revise the subs so that some of the terms would fit those of official localization? (Eclipse’s subs are fine the way they are but I’m just simply curious–since I heard that AtsA did something like that–nothing more.)

  19. Anon writes:

Did some comparisons of just the first episode for those interested.

    Coalgirls vs AtsuiAnime 1
    Coalgirls vs AtsuiAnime 2
    Coalgirls vs AtsuiAnime 3

Color differences are probably Funimation’s fault. I’m assuming Cyras is using the English discs.

  20. Hark0n writes:

    Thanks for hard work!

You should check out Tomodachi (TMD) subs. I think they have softsub karaoke, but I’m not sure about signs since I have only few of their episodes.

  22. banger writes:

wow that color difference is pretty huge in the cg vs aa comp above…is that legit?

    • coalgirl writes:

It’s due to Japanese TVs vs. American TVs. It’s something like American TVs display darker than Japanese ones, so to look the same, Americans brighten it up a bit.

  23. Taka writes:

eh i’ll go with coalgirls, sure AtsuiAnime’s color looks a bit shader, but that’s nothing a shades and lowering the brightness can’t fix

  24. Akina writes:

OMFG!!!!! O.O I just discovered FMAB BDs were being done by Atsa 2 days ago. I was excited and was going to start downloading them off Atsa’s IRC, but hoping some other group (thought of Coalgirls) who torrents, will pick it up. Because I absolutely HATE leeching off IRC >_<
    THANK YOU!! <333
    GRACIAS!! <333
    ARIGATOU!! <333

  25. cheshiredog writes:

_Technically_-speaking, I don’t think that this is an _SD_ upscale. It was done at 540p, which is definitely higher than SD (which would be 480), but it’s not really up to what is typically labeled as HD either. So, it’s kind of in limbo… Regardless, it’s certainly not native 720p, let alone 1080p, so it _is_ an upscale. It just isn’t an _SD_ upscale…

Entertainingly, FMA: Brotherhood was the first release by Funimation to be marked as native HD as opposed to just putting 1080i or 1080p for the resolution of the encoding on the disc.

  26. tormaid writes:

    @Coalgirl

So this is from the R1 BDs I take it? It’s a shame because most ppl will be playing it back on computer monitors.

  27. ZOC writes:

    Heya,

i was wondering this, the pack (torrent) is 27GiB in size, pretty decent size and no problem for my connection (100mbit symmetric), but at this moment it is not going faster then400KB/S.

is the original seeder still on it or did it drop off after the first couple of extra seeders?

Then again, i saw the Atsa popping up, i knew Coalgirls wouldnt be far behind, so i anxiously waited, Thanks allot _O_

  28. corocoro writes:

@cheshiredog: Because they received an upscaled master from the Japanese studio as far as I know.

  30. Tyler writes:

Not sure i understand, why are you upscaling 480 when a bluray of this has been released in 1080p?

  33. doruchan writes:

    @Tyler
CG isnt upscaling anything. Cyras seems to be using the US-BR.
The show is animated in 540p. But the us-distributer received an upscaled master hence calling his bluray native-HD.
So yes, there is the 1080p-BR, but the source is only 540p. Therefore encoding it in 1080p doesnt make sence.

  35. YinYang writes:

awesome, but why no Japanese 5.1?
I prefer original audio, dubbing is wierd.

  36. Og writes:

@ChrisK Pal SD is 720 x 576. “540p” is 960 x 540. I think just about anyone would rather have the latter – it is greater than PAL resolution, not less.

  37. Tyler writes:

    @doruchan

Well it did say 480p in the description, it’s changed now lol.

  38. Wall writes:

    So awesome. So very awesome.

  39. Cyras writes:

    @Tyler

No, it said SD from the start, even before the post was published…

  40. Nigeleyda writes:

    Why no typesetting?

  41. Cyras writes:

    @Nigeleyda

Cause most signs that are in episode 01-15 are just stupid and not necessary (those in the “comedy” scenes, which they thankfully started to use less after around ep 15.) They are not important to what they say or the story.

Signs that I felt was more needed was typesetted.

  42. person writes:

If Star Driver gets a 1080 release then why not this? Both are animated at 540p. Different encoders, different choices I guess.

  43. Seth writes:

What happened to episode 39? As you guys mentioned, Vol. 4 will include episodes 40-52. The previous volumes contained 13 episodes each meaning that up to date there are 39 episodes. Are you guys not finished with the episode as of yet or will you include it in a future release? I apologize if I come of as pestering.

  44. Seth writes:

Sorry, I’m totally ADD, and tend to read select posts at random. Thanks for letting me know, and great work.

  45. chris writes:

So if atsa used aa etc to make it look 1080p (and it does look amazing)
then why doesn’t everyone do it, as it improves quality?

  46. chris writes:

    I know.
I didn’t think AA can make that much of a change (as I konw what AA is)
So then why does atsa fmab blu rays look nice at 1080p?

I doubt it has anything to do with US Blu rays and Jap Blu rays

thanks for the reply btw :>
