Ok so I have managed to finish my Nichijou ;). Lots of edits on scripts, no patches due to the nightmare of different versions I have released. 19-24 are commie script with minor consistency changes.
“What about this show demands such a heavy bitrate?”
Nothing, really!
The Filesizes are just ridiculous… I still don’t get it why People thing “the bigger= the better”.
But HDD Space is so cheap nowadays HURR DURR…
@Kel, Tenshi encodes 1080p at CRF 13, this show apparently doesn’t compress very well, whether it’s “justified” or “reasonable” doesn’t really aply with Tenshi’s encodes, lol
Nowadays every has a decent machine anyway that can run 1080p…
Mine is i7 3960x overclocked to 5.0 Ghz, 32gb ram running at 1866 Mhz, HD 7970 tri – crossfired.
Overall i have around 20 1-2 tb external HDDs.
If i can get that so can anyone ^_^
For subs, would you be using pure Underwater, or Reinweiss modified version?
Why can’t a real encoder be doing this show? Most of the time I can just say “it’s okay as long as Tenshi isn’t doing it”. But then he goes and ruins a show I’m looking forward to. Another sad day to add to the list of Tenshi-ruined days.
I really don’t get the whining about size. I’m sure Tenshi isn’t the only one out there who’ll be doing encodes of this. If you’re not happy with Tenshi’s {unpaid for} efforts, then wait for someone from a different group. Or {_horrors_ .. gasp! (even)}, do your own encodes.
Really.
If I have to make a choice, overkill beats underwhelming every time. At least with overkill, I can transcode as suits myself perfectly every time. Heck, if someone would commit to a seedbox for me, I’d be happy to make my size and hardware optimized transcodes available.
Seriously.
Ohh god. There’re still a lot of faggot that can’t understand the way Tenshi encode things.
It’s getting lame now.
Do 8GB for each episode.
I always thought the fucking point of 10-bit was to have same quality as 8-bit but to have smaller file sizes
5gb~ for ONE episode? Tenshi, I know that your encodes are really heavy but seriously?
Tenshi! really loving your encodes! but: have you done tests with crf12 yet? how does it scale? i think the shows could sometimes use a bit more bitrate…
i see your point for using 8bit though. at these rates it doesn’t really matter anyways and the quality won’t differ much. in some of the darker scenes there could be a differecne… byut i doubt that you’t notice it while watching the series
@fan: “to the people wanting a lower file size, go see the show on a website that streams crappy quality.”
So I suppose there’s no possible middle ground, super-huge 1080p BD-remuxes or 360p web streams are truly the only options? I know “we don’t care about your opinion” ™, but imo it is possible to have high-quality encodes with few/no obvious flaws like blocking/banding, as well as reasonable file sizes at the expense of a few irrelevant video and audio details. Clearly, Tenshi/Cgi don’t wish to cater to that middle ground (and that’s fine), but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
I just have to wonder if some of the people clamoring for BD-remuxes are some of the same ones who whined about the English audio in Heroic Age depleting their precious CD-R supplies.

I felt my heart break when I saw these 720p 10bit filesizes…
How do you deal/are you dealing with the strange not-quite chromatic aberration? I wonder if it’s intentional…
Who the hell loads the encoded video directly into aegisub instead of encoding a small video to work with? That was really your only fucking reason not to support 10 bit? How laughable.
Your welcome to load 8bit workraw scripts into 10bit final copies, enjoy your scenebleeding.
Actually, remuxing BDs might be a good thing. What’s the point of encoding and losing quality if you don’t give a fuck about file size?
@ oh god: BD remuxes will be released for the 8-bit people, 10-bit CRF 16 is near transparent, 10-bit CRF 13 is about as close as you can get to the source
@tenshi: it’s good to see you not only going 10-bit, but also stepping up your overall encode settings. I feared you still using DXVA-isch settings, but you used placebo which is awesome.
A bit unexpected 😕
I always load 10-bit video into Aegisub via avisynth together with its stats file. Aegisub supports YV12 colorspace so all recent versions will work.
I thought everyone knows this 😕

Tenshi, could you please elaborate? I’m kinda interested in this question.
When I did c3 10bit testing I noticed that some frames were off compared to the 8bit encode which would have led to scene bleed.

You can’t make a 8 bit encode with the same number and timing of frames out of a 10 bit encode? How is that even possible? Everyone could do this with one line of ffmpeg or avconv. And you call yourself an encoder?
Putting in extra work just to go 10 is a waste of time, hence the wait for application support. If you don’t like it your free to encode it yourself the raws are free for anyone to use.

Wasn’t the problem “Your welcome to load 8bit workraw scripts into 10bit final copies, enjoy your scenebleeding.” as you said earlier?
Pre aegi2.1.9 I thought one had to make 8bit workraws, time/typeset and then make sure output was frame accurate to the 10bit. Way too much work IMO. I always work on the final copies in Aegi that way I am sure what I see is what I get.
Wow, if people don’t like it don’t d/l it. How hard to understand is that. I personally am d/l ing the 720p for this simply because i didn’t like the series enough to justify the 1080p size. I’m not going to piss and moan over something like this…IT’S FREE. It’s not like Tenshi is being an arrogant prick like some unnamed groups/encoders. People need to grow up and get over their unjustified entitlement complexes.
So…..sorry im dumb, but what does this mean? Will you start using 10bit? What about shows that’s already halfway in 8bit, like C3? Will it get rencoded? I kinda hope not, since that means ill need to redownload it…
Exactly as it says, I will start with this series. Shows currently in progress at 8bit will remain as such.
Ah, is that so. Thx, Tenshi.
And in other news… No nipples in the BD of Rinne no Lagrange.
^ The important stuff right thar.
CarVac says:

If you take a really close look at the TV eps this is already there (and I mean really close, like for example zooming into Madoka’s face when its first visible right at the beginning of ep 1). So my guess would be it’s intentional and already in the source. Looks like having more detail has its downsides here.
Oh no, there’s that “it’s free, stop complaining” argument. Comments are open, so people will come and voice their opinions whether you fanboys like it or not. Criticism shows that people actually care about how this release turns out.
Whining about whiners makes for meaningless commentary and is much more annoying than the original whiners.
@large_encodes……..believe me, I am most definitely NOT a CGi fanboy. In fact, most of the time I search for what I consider, better alternatives over CGi. This doesn’t give me the divine right to obnoxiously pound in my disgruntled complaints in CGi’s face. I’m sure the amount of d/l’s is sufficient enough to do that if it doesn’t meet enough peoples approval. There is a big difference between presenting criticism in a proper fashion then being a total asswipe about it (which the majority of “whiners” are.).
@Pyrii:
Like almost every other BD anime release in Japan, how new are you?
Uhmmm… there’s a font problem with the “Default” style in episode 3…. tried remuxing the previous fonts, checked the styles and couldn’t find anything wrong… oh well :0
Oh disregard that, it was just Haali screwing up.
Link to the 720 for episodes 3-4 is giving a page not found. Just so you know. (At least it was at 8:42 MST in UT)
Thank you, fixed.
For the 1080p version: in episode 3 there’s a little glitch at 11:21. Episode 4 was just fine. Thanks for the release!
Noted will fix.
will start making the transition to 10bit here <-Did you finally hear the voice of reason?!
I refuse to make an overnight transition to a new technology just like that. Transitions have to be planned, technology evaluated, and interoperability with existing devices considered. The transition to 10bit has already racked up a $1400 cost with projected $2500 total in order to bring the farm back up to production speed in 10bit as it was in 8bit.
Got the torrent. Thanks for the quick link fix. Now to download.
I love how people bash and question the guys that put this stuff out using their own free time. I mean really, good job guys. =D ( Thanks for your hard work Coalgirls’ co.)
I had dowloaded the 720p for this show and the video has some bad parts in it. when the light hits i get a green glow all over the sceen and i can’t see what is happening in the show, I was wondering if the video can be fix. Thanks
To all the faggots who troll and post your stupid, mind-numbing thoughts I thank you. My day instantly gets better after reading the CGi or any other forum regarding free “fan-subbed animu”. The way you constantly banter back and forth, “It’s free don’t bitch, or “I’m running out of HDD space”, or “Your encodes blow goats! Seriously? Grow up and be civil, stop trolling trolls. (I guess I should take my own advice, huh?) Anyway to Tenshi you are my hero, one of the best encoders on the interwebs, IMO. I have a lot of animu on my pc already, but I am always ready to add more as long as there are quality releases like Rinne no Lagrange.
I know my opinion is as important as………. well you know (canine feces), but for what it’s worth thanks Tenshi and anyone else that fills up my HDD’s with animu I didn’t pay for.So thanks agian for your time and hard work!
is it confirmed that 1080p ep 03 has a problem? and if so will it be fixed in the final batch or a sooner swap? just wondering if i should dl it or what
I hope OVA will add as leaves
thanks for the latest eps
So, why do you guys go through all of this labor?
Could you re-encode them? But make the episodes 10GB in size. Thanks.
I approve of the other Noko’s statement. I would really enjoy that.
^Oh you
(¬‿¬)
Can anyone recommend a good brand of external hard drives? I heard western digital is good, but there’s different types and I’m not too sure of which to get.
Just a FYI, CGi is powered by Western Digital Black HDDs, if that helps your decision making process. Oh, and whatever you do don’t buy the Green series.
… and by Hitachis and Samsungs. And yes, stay away from WD Greens.
So hopefully not all of the upcoming coalgirls releases are using that shit udp tracker. I’m sitting behind a firewall that blocks all udp connections, so i have no chance of getting any of those releases. So please, reconsider your decision.
The UDP tracker was only for the BDmuxes. Standard releases will be using the usual TCP.
Oh I’ve been wanting to see this happy you guys are encoding it! I might download when it’s finished. :3 that way I won’t have to worry about forgetting to download the rest of the episodes!
Thanks for the reply and recommendation Tenshi 🙂
@cloudstrife192
iomega is also good i have 1 and its almost full………
gonna get another one soon
