Lain was mostly animated on film so it should turn out looking really good. The problem is the CG and other digital parts so who knows how that will look and if it will effect the way the overall release is done.
So i guess Coalgirls couldnt resist Lain BD, though this better look better than Haibane Renmei!!
Also guess this statement must be ignored now:

@John
Q-tec upscales have excessive edge enhancement and sharpening filters, giving a smudging feel to the picture. Coupled with digital noise reduction it’s not exactly pretty.
well, well looks good. but upscalling scares me.
i urge u to use Zhentarim DivX subs. npc does not have opening or ending themes subtitles. plus, styling is quite scary as well. if u want i can give ZX subtitles to you. we’re thinking of subbing lain as well, but we’re still waiting for BR 😉
Nice pick , a non-fail anime show that doesn’t suck .I know that you said you wouldn’t do lain though in a previous update page[thats been deleted]
when someone suggested it so why buy it ?
Can i ask why you always do a 720p & 1080p version. Some video sources don’t deserve 1080p and would be better with a higher bitrate/filesize on 720p instead of 2 versions and would save you time and effort as well.
It may have been fansubbed on VHS back in the late 90s.
Supposedly the R1 Lain subs were tweaked a bit to soften the show’s anti-Western/anti-American elements, for marketability reasons. At least according to this guy– I can’t really say for sure because I haven’t watched Lain subbed in over 5 years. So if possible, it’d be worth finding a good TL checker to try and fix them. And by “good,” I mean “better than me” lol.
I don’t know if you care, but maybe you might want to change the the name “Arisu” to “Alice” which are being used in the official subtitles. The writer of Lain even confirmed that it was supposed to be a reference to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Can be read here: http://www.cjas.org/~leng/alice.htm
I know it’s nothing major, but since you’re working on it anyway, might as well do it right.
Also, thank you for deciding to upload the BDMV. It always irks me when groups buy stuff and don’t share the source if it isn’t available anywhere else.
Your last releases are crashing explorer.exe when thumbnailing if DivX codecs are installed. Also they don’t play on some Bluray and external players because they are incompatible with header compression on the video track. (by default on Mkvmerge 4.2.x)
Please can you disable header compression? You only have to do this little step before “Start muxing” and your releases will be compatible with lots of players. Also Explorer will never crash but that’s a problem DivX has to fix.
>Are these R1 based?
Fairly sure, I don’t even think there are english fansubs for Lain.
Great, glad you are doing this show!
I believe anon is right, no one fansubed this
One of the all time best!
Will definitely download. Can’t wait to see “Rumors”!
A worthy choice indeed! Can’t wait to see how the Blu-ray turns out, and I just watched the KAA’s DVD version too *laugh*.

very true, since a lot of times the CG and sfx were done in SD. this goes for so many live action TV shows too, as well as anime, espec mixed cel/cgi.
NPC uses R1 subtitles. But those DVDs have hard subbed onscreen text. So in the BDs the signs won’t be hardsubbed like on the R1 dvds?
Thank you for doing Lain! I wanted to watch it again.
OOO .. good timing.
I was thinking about download it any time soon.
Keep the good work.
let’s hope it’s not upscale
Good choice, definitely better than Highschool of the Boobs. I really enjoyed Haibane Renmei, I hope Lain will be just as good.

FUCK YEAH!!!!!!
ehmm… I mean, great!
I don’t think it’s gonna be upscaled since it has been delayed since 2009 =P
Why take such a long time for a horrible upscale?
Great, now I can stop my Torrent and wait for CoalGirls =D
No animation 8/
This is a Q-tec upscale, same staff that did the Haibane release.
I’ve read Q-tec upscales blurs too much, Can I have any opinions about this?

kudos
I think that smudging effect will look awesome on Lain.

I think any resolution increase will be welcome compared to the dvdrips most of us have watched over the years. :p
Oh man, i’m so excited about this release.
Thanks alot for your hard work.

Probably because tons of other groups have the shitty low-res releases already covered?
all hail to coalgirls for this.
They really did an amazing job with this re-master. My dvd rip looks like shit now, lol. Can’t wait!
Wow that PV looks fantastic 😀
I would definitely love to see this done. Lain is one of the great classics.

I have a version with subs by Kickass Anime…
My bad KAA used the R1 subs.

cant wait
SoooN
this was fansubbed only by one group, I am very happy to see the BDs finally out, thank you :3
It’s about time I rewatched Lain. I really hope you’ll finish it, I’m looking forward to the first episode. Thanks!
thx for this! it’s one the best series ever.
Wow – the OP looks great. Wow. I can’t wait for this.
Just to make sure – you didn’t include a font in the 720p, did you? Or is that the font you’re going to use?
Regardless, awesome picture quality. Can’t wait!
I included the fonts I’m going to use in the OP. It’s supposed to look blocky an trippy.
Incredible job re-mastering this series! The OP is amazing!
Also, thank you for deciding to upload the BDMV. It always irks me when groups buy stuff and don’t share the source if it isn’t available anywhere else.
Raw looks great, WOW.
Great quality and great rip! I want it now! 🙂
Me want moar now.
It says the 1080p version is completed but where’s the torrent?
I seeked through the 1st episode and there’s a typo in 06:56 – “everbody”.
