Iโm seeing that this is HEVC. Is there a reason that you didnโt mention/label it or do you want us to all figure it out by โ1080p will be a lot smaller from now on โ quote?
I checked your project page and I really like the new set up! One quick question tho. Is there a chance you might tell us which subs you will be using before hand?
And so it begins.
Fuck it. Time to resort to DeadFish transcodes.
Hey there. People make choices: some are good, sometimes they are bad, they may be different for different folks^^ Fact is, these are your choices and if anyone doesn’t like them it’s their problem.
Smaller 1080p encodes are definitely a good thing for everyone. The only things I know about HEVC are that it’s rather new, apparently higher quality and results in even smaller file sizes than 10bit encodes.
So far so good. What I personally don’t like is the discontinuation of 720p ๐ I’m using a laptop with 1440×900 resolution and running 1080p videos sucks. Part of the video is not visible and most importantly it doesn’t run fluid. So I have to use 720p due to sucky hardware. That’s why I’d prefer 720p encodes, be it 8/10bit or HEVC… for us people with “small” screens and slow PCs, but I’m just a nugget on the internet.
Well, there will be other groups doing anime, so no problems there. Worst thing, I have to take Commie and mux in a different script lol
(Btw, I’m saying this in general, not about Tokyo Ghoul, which I’m not planning to watch atm)
At least no one will complain about you not doing 480p encodes lol
Good day and have some e-Nuggets ๐
I didn’t consider that ’cause it hasn’t been an issue for anyone I know.
But your voice have been heard, this decision might change. I already have 720p encodes, its all about if I want to slap subs on them.
I watch anime on my laptop, and 1080p is above the resolution for it. That is why I DL 720p. The size isn’t much of an issue, but I don’t see the reason to like compress down to my screensize 1080 when 720p lines up almost perfect.
This is the best late April Fool’s joke I’ve ever seen! Good one, Coalgirls!
The video lags for me at certain places. It’s not like my computer is a complete potato, since I bought it last year. Do we really have to be on the cutting edge as far as HVEC goes? Can’t we wait until there is better hardware support (one of the main reasons why h264 is so great nowadays)? Or do I have to tuck all the CoalGirls releases away until I buy a new computer a few years from now?
Note that I said my projects in my post.
But, you might want to start with trying to update w/e you use to watch anime with.
I bought most of the parts in my computer over 4 years ago, but that doesn’t tell you much about my system though. So if updating the software doesn’t help, tell us more about your computer and how you try to open these files.
plebs pls
a downscale should not crop your video, and if it’s doing it, you should get better codecs. I recommend KCP, since CCCP is basically dead now.
Also, downscales are more stable than upscales, so get your shit together and stop complaining.
While everyone else is worrying about the HEVC or whatever I want to know if this is an unscensored Tokyo Ghoul release.
Nope.
Even the BD Source has some censored parts.
+1 h265 ๐
-1 no 720p ๐
Bit depth: 10bit or 8bit?
I do have an ok gig (can play any 1080p h264 10bit with the best madvr algorithms without losing frames) but this hevc one hogs my cpu. Too bad.
I do understand and agree with moving to better codecs. In a year or two, when more hardware is comfortable with these encodes, we’ll all be benefiting from it.
That said, I do think that moving to 1080p hevc only is a bit too much of a jump now.
Please consider transitioning more smoothly, by either releasing a 720p (hevc or h264) or a 1080p h264 as well.
Thanks for the release!
I am all on board with upgrading to better encoding processes and I love that you can get 1080p files to be around the same size as 720p BD files usually are. Sadly I am either super inept when it comes to codec settings and MP-C settings or my computer just can’t run the files correctly. Which means I will have to pass on this release and future ones unless I can figure out the settings or until I get a new computer. But like I said I am all for the upgrade and I respect your decision in making it.
Well they just slapped an orange on your torrent Nyaa side sadly. Honestly that place gets more ridiculous by the day. I’m shocked y’all still upload there.
Let Nyaa misrepresent torrents as much as they want. They just need to understand that for every A+ they give to an undeserving friend, every green they remove because it was released prior to one of their groups, and every legit release they mark at the same level of Deadfish out of spite, there will be at least one more person with half a brain who’ll stop trusting their systems and their methods.
In the meantime, we will continue to do what we always have done for the past 6 years, and will continue to do into the indefinite future.
been waiting to see if my new laptop can handle hevc; since i generally like your encodes, i guess now’s the time to try. thanks!
also, thanks for these batch-of-a-sudden releases. they always make my day.
@ nekochan / coalgirl – considering we already released an entire bluray batch and, I must assume, that no changes were made to the script (after we did all the hard work of adjusting them to blurays) and the only thing that is different is the encode, I’d say that falls strictly into Nyaa’s rules. I’d personally consider it exactly what the term’s name says, a “re-encode.” And, in order for the red-rule to be lifted on that, I’d expect some pretty damning evidence that the video in question is far superior to the original that we at DDY released.
I have no idea what Cyras changed, or how the encodes differ in looks. What I do know is that the timing of this red is very suspicious, and feels much more out of spite as opposed to any sort of rule.
You of all people should know about how they play with colors to spite people.
Some changes were made, mostly to typesetting and timing.
It’s not like I try to take the credit for, or do not appreciate the work you guys do. I’m aware how much time and effort groups put in their releases.
I just like to watch anime with things done my way, how I like it. I share my own work with people who likes things done in my way.
I don’t care abut Nyaa and their rules, but to lower my release to “a status” of a “re-encode” is just misleading, and wrong. I put my share of time on my releases too.
Sorry I offended you by saying your encode is terribly wrong, I was just annoyed at the time and that person surely didn’t put enough effort in his comparison. This really comes down to ones opinion in the end. That one person says one of the encodes is better than the other does not necessarily make that a fact. That’s what I really meant to say.
Screenshots
I uploaded a few screenshots so everyone can go get their own opinion on what they prefer. The flaws of x265 (HEVC) and x264 is clearly visible in the different screens, I’m not trying to make my release look better. What >I< consider a problem in your encodes is the amount of sharpening you applied. Simply too much for my taste as I can see the side effects it brings while watching. But yea, I meant no disrespect begna112. I appreciate the work you guys do over at DameDesuYo, and I look forward to using your subtitles again for Tokyo Ghoul Root A!
@ coalgirl – I do. But you can’t really complain when the upload fits the exact definition. And calling my encode “terribly wrong” (Cyras) doesn’t exactly make me cheery about this release.
Has a bluray category ever been suggested? Might solve your dilemma with Nyaa.
Had this release come at a different time, possibly even 2 days ago, I feel like it would be green to this moment. Is it a rule there? Sure it is. But the rules are subjectively applied, exempting friends and only being applied to groups that nyaa dislikes.
Didn’t realise this was a new encode, the video doesn’t play at all (audio comes through fine) on my macbook pro using the latest version of VLC.
Using LAV decoder 64 build reduced my cpu usage to half vs the 32bit version (no hardware aceleration). Try that if you you can’t play it because it is too slow.
The only downside HEVC has for me is I can’t use SVP because there is not enough free CPU.
@Nuggets-chan: “The only things I know about HEVC are that itโs rather new, apparently higher quality and results in even smaller file sizes than 10bit encodes.”
HEVC is a standard, 10bit is a bit-depth. The two really are different things (that can co-exist) ๐ That being said, HEVC (and x265, the encoder based on that standard) is indeed newer but by no means better. It’s just slooooooower compared to good ol’ x264, so maybe between that and the higher number that’s why people love to think it’s better.
Why on earth would you use H.265? Do you know how much days/weeks (not joking) it’s going to take you to encode? Remember, Tokyo Ghoul was already a very easy/small encode. Imagine encoding a full 1080p video with any amount of grain or basically anything else with HEVC. You’re going to be reverting back realll quick.
I’ve already done encodes on different sources, so I already know what to expect, and I still released this.
I have one x265-opus file dled some time ago and i couldn’t play the file on kcp (vlc played but u know). Time to try this one .
REAL SHIT HAS COME!!!!! THX COALGIRLS!!!!!
Thank you, Cyras!
Great to see h.265 encodes hitting the scene. Keep em coming.
is this jus sound or am I having problems with my player
^ same problems
What’s the CRF of this encode (or HEVC’s equivalent of CRF)? MediaInfo won’t give any info about this.
anyone knows of a good player I can use I’m currently using media player classic
Naturally, I do think it’s still a bit early for HEVC to come out in the wild, but w/e.
If you are very lazy, you can use kodi (formerly known as xbmc) to play HEVC out of the box.
If I’m correct this encode is also 10bit on top of being 1080p HEVC… (at least that’s what my mplayer 2015 compiled version is telling me).
If you are on linux, use either kodi or compile mplayer with hevc support yourself.
Tested on: i5 3317U 1.7 GHz-(up to 2.6 GHz turbo), 2 cores/4 threads. Took about ~50% of load on each core.
Like always,
Thanks Coalgirls.
Don’t use mplayer, it’s dead. Use mpv instead.
To anyone having trouble playing this. I’m using Media Player Classic with MadVR and LAV Filters. Smooth as butter and some amazing quality. As for the constant complaining, seriously there are two options. Download it or don’t. HEVC is seriously real good much smaller file sizes with little to no drop in quality. Also CG isn’t the first group to start using it either.
I, for one, am extremely glad that you are now using HEVC. Pretty much the only reason not to pick up one of your encodes before was their size, and now that is much less of an issue, especially considering it was a pretty small issue before. I implore you to continue using HEVC.
please consider 720 p realese
i have same problem as Nuggets-chan
my laptop is old and cannot handle
you guys are great
thanks
and sorry for bad english
Thanks for suggesting mpv, it indeed looks way better than mplayer.
Also some good news for whoever cannot play hevc:
– The Samsung Galaxy S4 is supposedly decoding hevc out of the box (see spec sheet).
– Intel announced a driver for hardware decoding hevc for IGP (iris graphics).
– Nvidia released/announced hevc main 10 and maybe main 12 profile support for vdpau
– Nvidia enabled hevc hw decoding since gtx960
– Snapdragon 810 brings HEVC 4k support to mobile phones.
Nowadays, even mobile SoCs are ridiculously powerful and can probably play 1080p HEVC easily. The minimum requirements is still interesting to know so you can get an idea what you need. Unfortunately I don’t have the resources to find that out.
The future looks bright as it will become an industry standard for 4K blurays anyway unlike Hi10p which was only used by the anime community and/or professionals.
I’m a Linux user, I have downloaded tons of movies from your work, and in this case I have tried 5 players among VLC (VideoLan) and it doesn’t work. So far I never had to install anything to watch them. Vlc says
“No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format “undf”. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.”
any hints?
forget I said anything, I just installed a newer version and it works. Thanks a lot
more people who makes HEVC encodes the better.
rest of the group should make their projects page a little nicer too maybe? how many views does the projects even get?
if someone having hard time playing HEVC, i suggest you use KCP-BE instead normal KCP. KCP-BE (black edition) its more stable to play HEVC no screen strutering like the last normal KCP, here is the link
http://haruhichan.com/projects/KCP/black/KCP_Black-1.0.2_%5B24039294%5D.exe
might gonna help ๐
thanks ChrisK I downloaded the mpv player it works great and I got to say this new Hevc encodes are great.
I forgot to mention I use VLC http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
thanks.
Cyras, good on you waiting until something is completed before picking it up and releasing it! After seeing all the posts from people complaining about *your* schedule not being up to *their* selfishly impatient standards, I don’t blame you one bit. I look to your stuff for quality not speed (all coalgirls releases are my archival release of preference).
As an aside, count me as another who would like to see 720 releases as well. Not so much for file size but because I watch on my laptop (up to the task, good screen, etc.). I don’t see a difference between 1080 and 720 with almost all anime, even when piped into my TV at home. If I do a frame comparison, maybe, but at 24 FPS am I studying line weights and pen strokes?
Regardless, thanks for the updates and the releases!!
As much i appreciate you doing this, i still think HEVC is still too early as an encoding standard for anime. Despite its minute file sizes compared to x264, the x65 paid a huge price in extremely slow encoding time and surprisingly, performing worse in high bitrates. Due to this fact, people turn away from x265 and to waiting for another newer version which is dalaa by Xiph and Mozilla. According to them, they claim that it will be a step better than HEVC in terms of performance. Whatever that means, unless x265 somehow manages to reduce their encoding time by a significant amount, people will still prefer x264.
Encoding time is not an issue. That is our end, not yours.
The video quality is definitely better. We saw a test done that claimed otherwise. You know why it fared worse there? Because the encoder put x264 at crf 18 and x265 at crf 25.7. We did numerous tests to check, and x265 is definitely better.
So all that leaves is playback. Sure, people now will have playback issues. But what about people in 1 year? 5 years? 10 years? Will they? Nope. So why not release the best quality.
Good video quality and it save a lot of space, really cool dude, thanks for another awsome project. I’m waiting anxiously for the next one.
Whats with all the “bad perfomance” guys? Are you watching HD Animes with a 30$ Laptop? Never had any stutter problems with x265, so instead of whining against a new standard you should upgrade your Hard/Software…
Works just great on my newly bought APU 7850K. Thanks ๐
@People_bitching_about_x265_encoding_time
99% of anime nowadays needs extensive and maybe intensive avisynth filtering to be at least watchable, and using that as source provider, you can expect heavy processing and low speeds. Given that avisynth with moderately constant denoising and debanding filters at approximately 2.5fps on a e5 1650 v3, both x265 and x264 will encode at THE SAME FUCKING SPEED. Unless you faggots are doing speedsubing reencodes from horriblesubs with no more than a LWLibavVideoSource(clip), x265 has nothing but advantages over its almost dead younger brother, shit264.
On other news, there’s 3 years iirc x265 was made a standard for blu-rays, so in the next year or so you will have x265 raw and round everywhere that does no .avi or similar shitty encodes.
I have a Toshiba satellite s50 b 150.
I7 5500U
8gb ram
r7 m260.
Usually the cpu load is about 30% but there are spikes to 60-70%. And the cpu is at 3GHz.
I use potplayer with lav, but lav does not support hvec with intel quick sync.
Is there a way to use my intel iGPU for decoding hvec?
First of all thanks for the release as always!
So I assume this is the secret project. As I read from “From now on I will only release a project once itโs done…..shouldnโt be a problem for those people anymore.” in my mind I think: The best think I have ever read!!!! And then “Iโll be using ordered chapters more often now too, so that helps.” I thought “Ow shit nigga” my mood completely ruin, everything turn 180 degrees, it cant be worse.
The ordered chapter nightmare never end :((
PS: I watch in phone, tablet so that’s my problem ๐
No, the secret project is one of mine. It’s nothing popular either.
It’s hilarious how LotusGG says all that but he just joined a group to encode in so-called “almost dead younger brother, shit264”. Sounds like you joined the wrong group, m8.
Ordered chapters means I won\’t see the credits in every episode, right? That\’s sad. And I remember that one episode of Darker Than Black where ordered chapters totally ruined a fade in effect from the running episode into the ending.
On an unrelated note, I\’d rather see the karaoke go away for good. Fansubbers could try softsubbing the actual credits into a clean version of the OP/ED, though. That would be awesome.
No, it means your player is shit.
