So was Nogizaka, Haibane Renmei, Mai Hime/Otome, Haruhi, etc. But it still looks better.

id be willing to pitch in for it since this anime is amazing!

  3. skyhack writes:

I wondered if this show was any good. Now that it’s showing up here, I’ll have to give it a shot.

  4. tormaid writes:

I’d pitch in a few bucks if you opened up donations. Can’t really afford the whole box atm…

  5. Sayer writes:

Wth is the difference in the two box sets?

Funny you should post this while i was thinking about ordering this exact thing to do my own BDs since the ones our are all bad.

Depending on how this would work im willing to buy them for you.

Shoot me a email and we can talk, should be in the email section just use that one.

Why is the R2 box set so bloody expensive?
Is it that much better than the upcoming R1 release?

  9. tormaid writes:

Funny thing is that Japan and the United States now share the same region code for BDs. Yet they still charge $$$ for stuff released solely in Japan. As for quality, it varies by show.

  10. mirumu writes:

@GGG I know nothing about the R1 box set, but I own the R2 one and I have to say it’s fairly disappointing quality-wise. The screenshots on mania.com fri linked to in the first comment look to be cherry picked examples. I’m generally for leaving film grain intact on BDs, but in my opinion the grain on these discs don’t doesn’t look like normal film grain at all. Looks more like quantization noise and I find it really distracting.

The BDs do still look better than the R2 DVDs, and there is definitely some more detail, but the DVDs weren’t exactly stellar examples themselves. I really liked the show so I’m rather upset at how these discs turned out.

My internet cap isn’t high enough to feasibly up them unfortunately. Would take me months.

    That upscale look awful

  12. mass attention writes:

You guys don’t see it odd that the R2 bluray was released around July last year which makes it not even a whole year that a R1 bluray is gonna be sold at April, makes me think that Funi only got the DVD masters source and upscaled it themselves which they do sometimes.
If anything looking at the R2 BD vs DVD comparison it was a pretty bad upscale so just hoping the R1 doesn’t make it worse.

50 bux for an entire series bd set? seems so cheap

  14. DarkChaplain writes:

Never heard of it but looks cool, so I’d throw some bucks into the pot as well

  15. Og writes:

@mirumu Wow, digital noise effects in SD digitally animated shows don’t look like film grain. That’s shocking.

  16. tormaid writes:

    @Mokuton

*Jedi Hand Motion* These are not the raws they’re looking for.

    I don’t thing CGi wants pre-encoded material.

  17. mirumu writes:

@Og Digital noise effects? Oh how I wish it actually looked that good.

  18. Og writes:

@mirumu Yeah, digital noise. How else do you think noise gets in a digitally animated show? Grain filter, noise filter, whatever. It doesn’t look like film grain because it isn’t. They added a lot to Garei Zero. Some people like it, a lot don’t. What should they use to remove it once it’s in there? Once it’s in there, there’s no way to remove it without making things worse.

  19. gah... writes:

will it be better quality than http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrentinfo&tid=192792 ?
    if so i want it.

I will keep an eye out at the local buy new and used stores I go to here in Japan for you.. If you want to contact me, my e-mail is valid that I use to post here, just let me know. (Sorry about the comment in the FAQs, I don’t really use IRC)

  21. mirumu writes:

@Og You’re missing my point. Digital noise filters don’t look like this. The noise they generate is more random. That’s why I described it originally as looking like quantization noise here because in many scenes it doesn’t actually look like random noise at all, it looks like they’ve just shoddily reduced the color resolution, and the “noise” is actually banding artifacts. Given how dark the show is, maybe that’s what they actually did as a side effect of trying to increase the contrast? The extra layer of digital noise on top I think was done to try any hide these problems.

I’m not saying I hate digital noise. I’m not saying it’s fixable or that they should have done so. I’m not saying you can’t like it for whatever reason. All I’m saying is that to me these discs look like some amateur hack job.

  22. Og writes:

@mirumu The R2 DVDs are just as noisy as the blu-rays, so if it was an amateur hack job, you can blame AIC Spirits for making the show look like this in the first place. They could have made it look perfectly clean, but for whatever reason they didn’t. I don’t expect the Funi BDs to look any better, unless they decide to try noise reduction, but there’s so much noise they’d probably get something like their Samurai Champloo BDs – not good.

if u still want the R1 BD u can e-mail me and i will upload it when I get my copy

I watched an episode, looks really interesting and the price is quite good too.
But it’s from US and the Swedish customs adds quite much toll and fees so it won’t be a bargain any more. Yet Amazon UK seems to have it also, although no information or price is given at the moment.
Else I found BD uploads from [Zero-Raws] of this at NyaaTorrents.

  25. bleh writes:

are you located in the US of A?

  26. bleh writes:

I don’t mind lending you guys my set when I get them and then just ship it back to me when you’re done.

  27. meh writes:

Somehow I wouldn’t lend a BD and expect it to be returned by mail.

  28. bikar writes:

    why not

  29. Sayer writes:

Yosh, I have been waiting for someone to get and release the BD’s. This is like one of my favorite shows and even if it is an upscale I know it will look better than the dvd’s. And thanks for using the Aniyoshi subs. Hope you keep them in the same style and everything because I think Aniyoshi did an awesome job with them.
